Norwegian Language Lesson: Singular and Plural Nouns

Objective
To understand how to form singular and plural nouns in Norwegian and apply this knowledge in practical contexts.

Introduction: Singular and Plural in Norwegian
In Norwegian, like in English, nouns can be singular (referring to one item) or plural (referring to more than one item). However, the way plurals are formed in Norwegian is different and depends on the gender of the noun and its ending.

Norwegian has three grammatical genders:

Masculine (en)

Feminine (ei) (can often use masculine forms)

Neuter (et)

Indefinite Forms

Singular Plural
en bil (a car) biler (cars)
ei bok (a book) bøker (books)
et hus (a house) hus (houses)
Definite Forms

Singular Plural
bilen (the car) bilene (the cars)
boka / boken (the book) bøkene (the books)
huset (the house) husene (the houses)
Rules for Plural Formation
1. Masculine nouns (en):
Add -er: en gutt → gutter (boys)

Definite plural: + -ene: guttene (the boys)

2. Feminine nouns (ei):
Add -er: ei jente → jenter (girls)

Definite plural: + -ene: jentene (the girls)

Can also use masculine article "en" and follow same rule

3. Neuter nouns (et):
If one syllable: usually no ending: et barn → barn (children)

If more than one syllable: add -er: et eple → epler (apples)

Definite plural: + -ene: barna (the children), eplene (the apples)

Irregular plurals:
Some nouns have irregular plural forms:

en mann → menn (men)

en fot → føtter (feet)
