Danish has nine vowels: a, e, i, o, u, y, a, e and à. Vowels in Danish may be short or long. The short variant is often slightly more open than the long vowel. Apart from i and u, the vowels are much more open when immediately preceded or followed by r than otherwise (compare bat with bar).
